The narcotics were recovered in the houses of residents; Gisele Uwimana, 28, Faustin Buregeya and Claire Tabu, who have since been arrested.

They are currently detained at Rubengera Police Station as further investigations continue.

During the public destruction of these narcotic on May 9, the Executive Secretary of Bwishyura Sector, Gideon Ndendambizi, called upon residents to respect national laws and to fight against narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances by collaborating with security institutions to weed out drug dealers.

The law governing narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors in Rwanda, in its Article 24, also states that “any drink that exceeds forty five percent of alcohol and any other drink which doesn’t have the required quality for consumption shall be considered as narcotic drug.”

“Drugs and other dangerous narcotics like illicit brew have a negative effect on society. They fuel dangerous crimes such as Gender based violence and burglary, while they also destroy the future of young people. As responsible citizens, let us all play our role in fighting against this scourge,” he said.

Ndendambizi reminded residents to always provide timely information to Police in order to intercept drug dealers and also educate the youth about the dangers associated with drug abuse and alcoholism.

The Station Police Commander of Bwishyura, Inspector of Police Kayiranga Hitimana, said that the successful anti narcotic operation was aided by information provided by residents, and urged them to continue working with Police through Community Policing in order to overcome drugs and crimes in general.
