{Residents of Gicumbi district are worried over the increasing number of theft cases of their would-be harvests at maturity, especially beans and Irish potatoes, residents have to the media.}
Muhabuka Xaverine, one of residents whose crops have been harvested by thieves, says she has realized that much of her would-be harvest is lost to thieves, leaving her family in perpetual losses.
“I am wondering what my next step should be. My crops are stolen all the time—beans, Irish potatoes and maize,” Muhabuka told members of the press recently.
Another resident said; “Thieves take advantage of the lunar luminary during the night, harvest our crops and take off. Security personnel should be more agile in monitoring and ensuring total security of residents and property,” he said.
The agronomist of Gacurabwenge cell, Munezero Angelique, confirms the rampant thefts and calls on all the concerned parties to work together to completely eliminate the vise from their midst. “We encourage citizens to employ field guards. It will be easy to safeguard crops since we have adopted land consolidation,” she said.
Other than garden plunders, residents say there are some other forms of theft that go either unreported or unpunished, a trend that is worrying and should be reversed.
