The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINAFFET) has commended Rwandan Diaspora for the significant contribution to the development of the Country.
That was announced yesterday 23rd April 2013, during in a National Steering Committee Meeting aimed at analyzing achievements registered during the fourth phase of Migration and Development for Africa Great Lakes Programme between 2008 & 2012.
MINAFFET and Rwandan Diaspora have been working together to strengthen three sectors namely Education, Health and Rural Development.
For the last four years, MIDA Great Lakes Program has strengthened capacity of local institutions, making use of the resources of the Diasporas in response to rural development needs.
Eugene Kandekwe, the Coordinator of MIDA Great Lakes Program said that working with Diaspora is due to the fact that the later is made of people who are skilled and they are able to impact on the socio-economic development of the country.
Activities of Rwandans living in Diaspora have produced tangible results including the capacity building activities at Tubiteho daycare, a center for children living with mental and sensory disabilities; strengthening the management of patients’ files in the various services of the hospitals.
The program also contributed to sustainably building capacities of more than 30 local institutions in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda by making qualified members of the Diaspora available on a regular basis in the framework of the projects.
Speaking on behalf of MINAFFET, the Director General of Rwandan Community Living Abroad, Parfait Gahamanyi, recalled that the concept Migration and Development for Africa (MIDA) seeks to respond to the brain drain phenomenon in African countries through the creation and strengthening of sustainable links between Diasporas and their countries of origin.
