Three teachers of Groupe Scolaire Kageyo in Gicumbi district have been arrested by police over suspected role in mobilizing students from Gihembe camp for demonstrations.
The demonstrations were held on Monday by students transferred from Gihembe camp schools to Groupe Scolaire Kageyo who claimed that their 17 teachers should not leave claiming the newly recruited teachers are incompetent.
A majority of the demonstrating students are refugees from Gihembe refugee camp claiming that capable teachers were sacked for demanding a reasonable pay and were replaced by incompetent ones. Last week, IGIHE reported about the 17 teachers at Groupe Scolaire Kageyo who resigned their jobs after failing to secure a salary they had agreed upon with their employers.
The teachers had been transferred to the school with 500 students from a school of Gihembe camp.
During the demonstrations, students broke some window glasses of Groupe Scolaire Kageyo, pelted stones to security personnel that had come to calm the situation which prompted the police to fire bullets in the air to disperse the rampaging students.
The arrest of three teachers has been confirmed by police spokesperson in Northern Province, IP Gasasira Innocent in an interview with IGIHE.
“It is true that we have arrested three teachers suspected to be behind recent demonstrations,” he said.
IP Gasasira has said that three students arrested during the protests have been released to continue studies with others.
