Teachers receive laptops

Primary and secondary school teachers across the country have started receiving laptops that will help them promote IT teaching and learning.

Africa Smart Investments- Distribution, a company responsible for distributing Made-in Rwanda laptops started on Sunday with handing laptops to 90 teachers from various provinces over the weekend to be paid for through their savings in Umwalimu Sacco.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Musafiri Papias Malimba said that the computers are meant to help teachers improve performance.

“This program of distributing laptops among teachers will support implementing the policy of embracing technology in the education sector. We hope the laptops will help beneficiaries to effectively accomplish their duties while promoting teaching profession,” he said.

He explained that One Laptop per Child program faced challenges as some teachers had inadequate computer knowledge. However, Musafiri says donating laptops to teachers will facilitate them to teach from an informed point of view.

Akimana Drocella, 54, a primary one teacher in Gasabo district said she would not feel comfortable hearing One Laptop per Child yet many teachers did not have knowledge to pass on to learners.

Each computer is valued at Rwf 287,000 Teachers also received Airtel modem with two-year free internet.

Teachers will pay monthly installments equivalent to a tenth of their salaries through Umwalimu Sacco.
