  • Genocide Suspect Tells Court ‘Iam Uwinkindi Jean not Uwinkindi Jean Bosco’

    {{Uwinkindi Jean, a genocide suspect currently being tried in Rwanda has rejected all counts against him saying that he was arrested for crimes he did not commit arguing that the arrest warrant carried a name of Uwinkindi Jean Bosco not Uwinkindi Jean.}}

    Uwinkindi made the remarks while appearing before Nyarugenge court August 27.

    This followed prosecution’s request to keep Uwinkindi in dentention through the course of his trial but Uwinkindi and his lawyers sought for a release saying he was innocent.

    Uwinkindi’s lawyers including Gatera Gashabana and Niyibizi Jean Baptiste requested court to release their client saying the names appended on the arrest warrant used to seize Uwinkindi are not the names of their client and thus he should be set free because he is innocent.

    The Genocide suspect who had previously refused to say anything in court, later said the Arrest warrant issued by the ICTR in Arusha bore the names of Uwinkindi Jean Bosco yet he is refered to as Uwinkindi Jean.

  • French President to attend Francophonie Summit in DRC

    {{French President François Hollande announced August 27, that he will participate in the Francophonie summit (Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF)in DRC capital,Kinshasa in October.}}

    “I’ll go in a few weeks to the Francophonie Summit in Kinshasa. I will reaffirm that the Francophonie is not just a language but also share common principles and ideals,” he told a French Ambassadors Conference at the Elysee Palace.

    François Hollande has promised to meet with the political opposition, civil society activists and civil society.

    “This is the meaning of the new African policy of France say everything everywhere and ensure that what is said or done,” he said, indicating that in 2050, “80% of Francophones are Africans, 700 million women and men, everyone understands what is at stake here. ”

  • Rwanda National Police Opens Peace Support Center

    {{The Rwanda National Police (RNP) inaugurated a new Peace Support Operation Training centre in Gishali Police Training School in Rwamagana District aimed at facilitating the force’s Peacekeeping Missions.}}

    The centre which boosts of three blocks is a donation from the Germany International Cooperation Agency (GIZ).

    During the event, GIZ also handed over to Police two vehicles, which will facilitate the force in its Peacekeeping training activities.

    GIZ is one of the force’s major partners, which has also been supportive to its several programmes such as forensic science in photography, Gender Based Violence (GBV) and traffic policing.

  • Son to Rwanda Senate President Stabbed in Stomarch

    {{The son of Rwanda’s senate president is reportedly under intensive care in critical condition at a hospital in Belgium.

    Unknown people attacked and stabbed him in the stomarch severely injuring his intestines.}}

    Roger Ntawukuriryayo was on his way to The United States to resume studies after a two months holiday.

    Dr. Jean Damascene Ntawukuriryayo, the president of Rwanda senate, told IGIHE that his son flew out of Rwanda on August 23 enroute to U.S where he is a university student.

    He said his son had to make a stop over in Belgium to pick some documents before he would continue to U.S. Roger completed his college education in Belgium.

    Roger Ntawukiriryayo was reportedly walking with his two Rwandan friends and one Congolese friend.

    They encountered a group of other people numbering about eight; He was later stabbed in the stomach and severely injured. He was rushed to hospital.

    The attackers have not been identified and the motive of the attack hasn’t been established.

    “Investigations are being conducted,” its possible the attack could be related to the recent attacks against Rwandan citizens by Congolese nationals in Belgium,” Dr. Ntawukuriryayo told IGIHE.

    IGIHE correspondent in Belgium said the Rwandan Embassy in Belgium is also making investigations into the matter.

    It is said the hospital where Roger Ntawukuriryayo is being hospitalized is heavily guarded by Police making it very difficult to access.

  • Gitwaza, Mihigo Kizito Disagree on Gods Mercy

    {{The just concluded crusade code named ‘Rwanda Shima Imana’ held Sunday August 26, that brought together believers from different denominations resulted in disagreements between renowned artist Kizito Mihigo of the catholic faith and pastor Paul Gitwaza of Zion Temple.}}

    The two prominent personalities disagreed on the bible teachings.

    Normally before Mihigo starts singing, he first explains to his fans the origin and message in his songs and this is what he did before he sang Arc en ciel (Umukororombya).

    In explaining the song Arc en ciel (Umukororombya), Mihigo said the message is derived from the bible book of genesis 6, which Mihigo says describes how God expressed his disappointment towards man especially in the Noah’s arc incidence.

    The artist further provided several citations from the Bible explaining how God expressed both his mercifulness and disappointment to man.

    Mihigo further explained that God later expressed his mercy and disappointment through Jesus Christ as manifested in Jesus’ teachings.

    Thus the message in Mihigo’s song is derived from Gods mercy which he says wants to be bestowed to Rwanda.

    However, Pastor Gitwaza who was the coordinator of the event took to stage saying don’t Blame Mihigo, he didn’t study theology like me.

    “Let me first correct Mihigo especially where he alleges that God killed his own people. God does not kill his own people. It’s Satan who kills them. When there are killings its Satan doing so but not God.”

    Pastor Gitwaza added that Mihigo is not a pastor; he is not even a reverend. He is just a young gospel singer. Don’t blame him.”

    In a new twist Mihigo took to the stage and responded to pastor Gitwaza comments saying, “Brethren Gitwaza I realize you did not understand my explanations of the song Arc en ciel (Umukororombya).

    “I didn’t say that God is an angry God. But I said God expressed his anger and mercy more with the coming of Jesus Christ.

    Mihigo further noted that at such an event converging various religious denominations, nobody should assume the role of correcting others because this would mean one trying to take others to his own church.

    Gwamaka will also take home a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and a Samsung Galaxy SII Smartphone as part of his prize.

    First initiated in 2011, MTV Base Meets…with MTN connects African youth with inspirational or influential thought leaders, opinion formers, decision makers and role models who shape their world.

    Influencers who have featured in the show so far including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, supermodel Alek Wek and hip hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons.

    Further influencers still to feature in the current series include Togolese international footballer Emmanuel Adebayor (29 August) and Archbishop Desmond Tutu (5 September).

    Gwamaka won the opportunity after entering a SMS competition run by MTV and MTN in Rwanda.

    “I am delighted because as a youth ambassador I will be among the few who will participate as a panellist to interview Akon. At that level I am also a youth ambassador for the whole country. I will carry my Rwandan flag and I will surely represent the country well,” Gwamaka said.

  • More Sex Could Increase Women Fertility–Study

    {{Scientists at the University of Saskatchewan and an international team of researchers have discovered that a protein in semen actually prompts ovulation in females.}}

    The findings, which appears in the current issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, raises intriguing questions about the role of semen in fertility in mammals, including humans.

    This implies the semen of a male mammal may actually induce a female’s fertility.

    “The idea that a substance in mammalian semen has a direct effect on the female brain is a new one,” Gregg Adams the lead researcher of the international team explains.

    These new findings confirm that semen is not only important as a vehicle that carries sperm, but also directly plays a role in triggering ovulation.

    Dubbed as the ovulation-inducing factor (OIF), the identified protein acts as a signal to the female brain to trigger the release of other hormones that then prompt the ovaries to release an egg.

    For couples who have been struggling to conceive, these findings unlock new clinical insight on the causes of infertility and how it can be treated, including more non-invasive options such as lifestyle changes.

    In this case, having more frequent and sexual intercourse may be an option worth trying.

  • Man Stabbed, All Teeth Crashed Out

    {{Over the weekend, a man identified as Nduwayezu Felicien in Burera district was severely injured after he was stabbed and his teeth crashed out by a group of young men under the influence of a highly alcoholic illegal substance.}}

    The incidence happened in Gahunga sector of Burera district where multiple murders had occurred including a case where a man killed his one and a half year old child, stabbed his wife and attacking several neighbors before taking his own life.

    The man identified as Nhsimiyimana Emmanuel is reported to have been under the influence of an illegal alcoholic brew locally known as “munini”

    Nduwayezu said,“We were drinking when my friends attacked me. We were drinking that brew called munini.” He explained
    Nduwayezu is now admitted at Gahunda health centre.

    François Xavier Urimubenshi a doctor at the health centre revealed that Nduwayezu was in very bad condition when he was brought in but adding that he is now hopeful he will make a full recovery.

    Burera district mayor Sembagare Samuel commenting on the incident urged area residents to report any illegal activities especially selling and consumption of illegal brews because it has led to serious crimes of assault and murder.

    “I am asking the residents to be their neighbor’s watchful eye. I am laying a lot of emphasis on this; we do not want to hear of these cases of assault again,” The mayor said.

    He warned, “All the bars should operate within the legal hours, when they exceed late into the night, this is when the illegal brews are sneaked in and consequently they start behaving like insane people.”

    The mayor said that the district authorities and security organs have taken strict measures to crack down on the distributors of this illegal brew.

  • 50 Cent Appeals to Young African Entrepreneurs

    {{U.S. Rapper 50 Cent is looking for business partners from Africa, to be the sole distributors of his energy drink SK in their respective countries.}}

    His intention is to choose a partner in every country in Africa, to work closely with him on marketing and selling the brand in their respective state.

    SK, which stands for Street King, is an energy drink developed by the musician and businessman to not only provide a body boost, but also raise cash for starving populations in Africa.

    “Giving back to hungry children with every shot we sell is only part of the story. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel across Africa, and one thing I’ve learned is that it is filled with vibrant, young entrepreneurs who are eager to cultivate a sustainable business sector that will fuel growth for their future.

    That’s why I’m giving African entrepreneurs the chance to bring SK to their country,” said the rapper in a statement.

    50 Cent recently visited Somalia and Kenya, where he toured schools in Somalia and Kibera slum Nairobi.

    “Everyone thought that we would expand immediately to Europe or South America. But if you know SK, you know the vision has always been to support my roots in Africa,” he said.

    “I’ve had so much interest coming from Africa since I’ve launched SK. That’s why I’m opening up submissions to entrepreneurs across the continent to become distribution partners.”

  • Uganda to Host CECAFA Tournament

    {{Uganda will host the 2012 East and Central Africa Senior Challenge Cup after Kenya was stripped of hosting rights due to its poor organisation, officials said.}}

    Kenya was appointed to host the regional competition at the last Cecafa congress meeting in Dar es Salaam last December.

    However, general secretary Nicholas Musonye said they have had to reverse that decision after the tournament sponsors, East African Breweries Limited asked to move it to Kampala.

    “The sponsors raised their concern over the organizational abilities of the Football Kenyan Federation, which has been accused of being so divisive.”

    “The sponsor has the final obligation to make their decision where they would want the tournament to be held. It’s Uganda and that is their stand,” said Musonye.

    Meanwhile Rwanda President Paul Kagame hosted the Cecafa champions-Yanga Africans Sports Club of Tanzania- Village Urugwiro, 23 August.

    President Kagame noted that sponsorship of the regional tournament (populary known as Kagame Cup) will continue even after he leaves political office.
