{Rwanda National Police yesterday paraded a man who is alleged to have stolen 36 million Ugandan Shillings from a Ugandan engineering company and fled to Rwanda.}
Of the stolen money, RNP also managed to recover US2700 and 3.3million Ugandan shillings from the suspect identified as Brian Akankwasa, who was arrested last week in Kacyiru, Gasabo District.
The recovered money was handed over to the rightful owner, January Bamanzi, the owner of Engineering Works LTD.
Akankwasa allegedly stole the money on December 15 from the offices of Engineering Works LTD, and immediately crossed over to Rwanda.
RNP handed over the recovered money to the owner, Bamanzi while the suspect was handed over to Uganda police officers, who immediately transferred him to Uganda where he will be charged of robbery.
Speaking to the press after receiving the money, Bamanzi praised the Rwandan police for its swiftness against cross-border crimes, and in recovering his stolen money.
“After learning that the suspect entered Rwanda, I came to Rwanda and filed a case. Officers worked tirelessly and always notified me of the progress in their investigations until the time of his arrest. This is very impressive I didn’t expect all this to happen this fast, and I am really thankful to Rwandan Police,” said Bamanzi.
He explained that the suspect was his former employee, who was relieved of his duties about four months ago, and suspected to have forged a key, which he used to open the room where the money was kept.
The suspect told Police that he had used part of the money to buy motorcycles, which he said he would sell and refund the money.
“With the advanced technology and cooperation between our security agencies, I can assure you no one case escape the long hand of the law,” said the Police Spokesperson ACP Celestin Twahirwa.
RNP also handed over the suspect to Kigezi region Deputy Police Commander Senior Superintendent of Police Enock Ndyomugenyi who also hailed the cooperation between Uganda and Rwandan Police Forces.
“We pledge to continue with this kind of cooperation to ensure that no criminal from either country can escape or hide in another,” he said.
Similarly on December 3, RNP also handed over 11 million Ugandan shillings (approximately Rwf4 million) to a Rwandan businessman in Uganda after it was recovered from the suspected thief, who had crossed into Rwanda.
In January this year, RNP also handed over Rwf8 million to a Ugandan businessman part of the money which had been stolen from him in Kabale, Uganda.
Again in June, about Rwf750,000 was returned to a Ugandan businessman, after it was recovered from a suspected thief who had crossed into Rwanda, also through the Kagitumba border post.
