He was arrested on Sunday 9th January 2022 after killing one of bushbucks that have crossed the perimeters of Akagera National Park.
The executive secretary of Murundi sector, Benon Gashayija has told IGIHE that the resident is a poacher who did neither kill the wild animal by accident nor self-defense.
“The man hailing from Bugabwa cell was arrested yesterday for killing a wild animal. He has breached the environmental law by killing a bushbuck. Poachers in the area usually lay traps to kill bushbucks roaming around perimeters of the park yet they are not aggressive,” he said.
Gashayija appealed on residents to stand against hunting wild species noting that whoever breaches the law will be handed over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau for further legal process.
The law on environment states that any person who hunts, sells, injures or kills a protected animal species and products thereof, commits an offence.
Upon conviction, he/she is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than five years and not more than seven years and a fine of between Rwf5 million and Rwf7 million.
