As part of Rwanda National Police (RNP) crime prevention strategies, police officers reached out to over 400 students of Groupe Scolaire Kayumbu in Kamonyi District and enlightened them on effects of drug abuse and the role the youth in fighting drugs.
Inspector of Police (IP) Athanase Niyonagira, the District Community Liaison Officer of Kamonyi, while speaking to the students on March 1, reminded them to not indulge in crimes including sale or consumption of narcotic substances.
“Addicts of such substance always have a bad ending since they are the ones involved in crimes like assault, theft, rape and defilement among others.”
“They usually commit such offenses when they are under influence of illicit substances that’s why we have to collectively fight abuse of drugs by reporting anyone who consumes or traffics them,” he said.
He went on to tell the students that cases of unwanted pregnancies among young girls are most times related to drug consumption that also put them at the risk of contracting diseases like STDs due to drug abuse.
He further urged the school administration to conduct regular inspections among students, collaborate with law enforcers and consult with parents about their respective roles in fighting drug abuse. He concluded by advising them to form anti-crime clubs in their schools.
One of the students, Musa Niyodusenga, 19, expressed commitment on behalf of fellow students, in the fight against drugs and pledged to spread the message to other students and youth within Rwandan communities to raise awareness against sale and use of illicit substances.
