Strengthen food processing—experts

Experts in Food Science and technology say that increasing food processing industries in Rwanda would be a sustainable solution addressing lack of markets for agricultural produce and minimize post-harvest losses.

Dr Prof. Anastase Kimonyo, a member of Food Processing and Technology association said that food processing sector in Rwanda needs to be strengthened to address markets shortage.

He revealed this yesterday in a meeting held in Kigali that brought together Rwandan and experts and others from East African region seeking solutions to lack of markets for agricultural produce.

“We can’t say that food sector in Rwanda is left behind but increasing the number of industries processing food is one of the sustainable solutions to address food related problems. It would encourage farmers as they cultivate expecting a good market,” said Prof. Kimonyo.

The meeting comes at a time when Rwanda is strengthening the promotion of Made in Rwanda products.
