Rwanda has expressed deep concern regarding the ongoing support and collaboration between the government of the DRC and various illegal armed groups and foreign mercenaries. These actions are seen as escalating provocations along the Rwandan border and are perceived as violations of the Luanda and Nairobi peace processes.
Fighting in eastern DR Congo, specifically in the North Kivu province, resumed on Sunday, October 1st. Both the FARDC and the M23 rebel group have accused each other of initiating the renewed hostilities. This is despite calls from regional leaders to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Notably, the Chiefs of Defence Staff from a four-bloc mechanism for DR Congo are set to convene in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the auspices of the African Union (AU). The purpose of this meeting is to coordinate troop deployments in the resistant eastern regions of the DRC.
In response to these developments, Rwanda has pledged to maintain defensive and preventive measures to safeguard its airspace and borders. The goal is to counter any potential spill-over into Rwanda from armed groups, ensuring the security and safety of Rwandan citizens and residents.
