Stop bashing Rwanda on human rights

{President of the Supreme Court Prof. Sam Rugege has castigated some people and institutions bent on sabotaging the unity of Rwandans Rwanda by painting a gloomy picture casting Rwanda as country with no respect for human rights, warning such individuals not to put their personal and political interests above national development aspirations. }

He conveyed the message this week during a swearing in ceremony of Gatera Emmanuel who was appointed commissioner to the National Commission for Human Rights.

Rugege noted that in the last 21 years, Rwanda has taken giant strides in the sphere of human rights with extra-judicial impositions totally eliminated.

“We are proud of that attained progress which is apparent to everyone; personal security, health, access to education and job opportunities, fight against discrimination, caring for children welfare and vulnerable persons, gender equality, right to property and justice among others,” he said.

He stressed that despite the prophets of doom efforts to tarnish the country’s image, the people of Rwanda are well versed with their history, appreciate where they are and have good control of their destiny. “Rwandans know the truth, enjoying our freedoms and get justice.”

National Commission for Human Rights was established to promote the respect for human rights following the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. The commission sensitizes and mobilizes Rwandans on human rights and partners with justice organs, National Office of the Ombudsman among others to counter violence, receive and evaluate investigation results on human rights violation.
