South Korea to support Smart Rwanda master plan implementation

{The government of Rwanda through the Ministry of Youth and ICT has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Information Society Agency (NIA), a Republic of Korea firm, to provide support to Rwanda’s information and communication technology sector through accelerating Smart Rwanda 2020 master plan implementation. }

The Minister of Youth and ICT, Jean Philbert Nsengimana who signed on behalf of Rwanda said that the cooperation comes at a time when it is needed as Rwanda is undergoing a process of establishing Rwanda Information Society Authority (RISA).

“It is a good opportunity since Rwanda Information Society Authority is going to be established having already launched the cooperation. Korea’s National Information Society Agency has operated for 30 years and has acquired enough experience in various domains of implementing policies of developing the country through technology. We are ready to collaborate and reach their experience quickly,” he said.

The minister said that there will be established an institute facilitating people to access information and creation of innovations expected to help the youth to participate in making computer applications and creating new jobs.

The president of NIA, Dr Suh Byung-Jo highlighted their experience which will enable the realization of Smart Africa program.

“We want to share our experience with Rwanda and make it a model in Africa in regard to the use of technology,” he said.

Byungo-Jo said building national competitiveness in such initiatives as smart city, smart factory, smart farm, among others, are an indication of ICT convergence which the developing countries should take advantage of.

He said the partnership will ensure successful sharing of the firm’s experience and expertise with the rest of Rwandans.

“I would like to also express our commitment to support Rwanda’s ICT development with all the technology and know-how we possess, based on the partnership cooperation channel between Korea and Rwanda,” Byungo-Jo said.

Under the Smart Rwanda Master Plan, Rwanda seeks to attract more private led investments and youth innovations to create more jobs, but also to contribute to Africa’s broader digital transformation agenda through smart Africa.
