SORWAL former employees to regain jobs

The Huye District-based factory was closed for evading taxes worth over Rwf4 billion.

Almost ten years later, in September 2018, SORWAL was auctioned and bought by an investor, Osman Rafik for Rwf168 million.

On handing over the factory by Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) to the investor, it was announced that new management will offer jobs starting with those who had been working for the factory before its closure.

His representative, Cleophas Barajiginwa reassured former employees that they will be reinstated on their jobs. “They were professionals and they told us about the issues of not being paid, to which we felt we should give them jobs. We have already received 63 and we expect to employ 300.”

Some of the reinstated employees say they are happy to regain a regular source of income.
One of them, Mediatrice Nyota says; “The investor welcomed us and told us that all of us who had been working in Sorwal will be employed again. I am myself excited because I have been in poverty for some time. ”

SORWAL former employees who went to court and sued for unpaid wages will be paid by RRA while those who didn’t take their complaints to courts or those who sued but their cases were not decided on do not have right to the outcome of the auction.

It is reported that more than 130 Sorwal employees have not been paid.

SORWAL was founded on October 25, 1981.
