Police have arrested six suspects who allegedly robbed a Bank Populaire du Rwanda, Rutsiro District branch of Rwf 23 million and US$1520. The suspects include the branch manager and security guard at the bank.
According to the Police spokesperson in the Western Region, Inspector of Police (IP) Theobard Kanamugire following the robbery that happened on Saturday August 08, at night, police mounted investigations of which preliminary finding pointed at six people.
“Among the suspects we apprehended included Emmanuel Maniraguha, the branch manager, and Anastase Kavamahanga, a security guard. We linked the robbery to the suspects after searching the latter’s house and found about Rwf 4 million stashed there,” said Kanamugire.
Kavamahanga who confessed to being part of the robbery, detailed how the heist was executed saying that Maniraguha left the bank on Saturday afternoon and told him that he would return to pick money and that also give him his cut out.
Maniraguha alleged returned to the back at around 10:00PM with six other people, opened the doors and walked out with the money. He left the guard with about Rwf 4 million.
“During the investigations, one of the investigators who was monitoring Kavamahanga saw him fidgeting to get a phone; he watching him closely and heard him giving instructing to his wife to use some of the money and hire a lawyer. we used this information as a lead and we immediately went to his house, search and found Rwf 4 million. Kavamahanga immediately confessed and detailed how the bank was robbed,” IP Kanamugire said.
Kanamugire pointed out that although money was recovered, the crime was already committed and the suspects’ files will now be forwarded to the prosecution as stipulated by law.
However, the bank manager, Maniraguha who did didn’t show up at work the next day after the robbery claims he was not involved in the robbery. The six suspects who are all in detention include three other bank staff and another security guard.
