Seoul Marks the 21st Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi

{{Seoul, 07 April 2015}} – {The Rwandan Community in the Republic of Korea gathered to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi. The event started by a Walk to Remember where Rwandans and more than 100 of their friends shared with the people of Korea our history using banners and by a peaceful march of 30 minutes, from a the train station to the venue where the commemoration took place.}

At the venue they met with the diplomatic Heads of Missions, high diplomats, distinguished government officials mainly from the Ministry of foreign affairs, CEOs and Chairmen of Private and Public institutions, and other friends of Rwanda from all parts of Korea.

One of the genocide survivors in the Rwandan community gave his testimony, it was very emotional and instructive for the gathering, particularly people who attended the event for the very first time.

The Dean for African Missions based in Seoul, who is currently the Ambassador of Morocco, also addressed the participants with a very touching message of hope. Then came a Friend of Rwanda, Young-shim Dho, she was so proud to talk about Rwanda and the progress she has witnessed over the years since 1999 when she came in Rwanda for the first time.

In his remarks, the Director for Africa in the Ministry of foreign affairs, stated that Korea has no doubt at this very time that Rwanda is a viable country when it comes to Korean investments.

In her remarks the Ambassador of Rwanda to Korea, Emma Francoise Isumbingabo, mainly talked about fighting Genocide denial and revisionism while remembering those who lost their lives during the Genocide. It is an important occasion to remember the lives that were lost, to show solidarity with survivors and unite to ensure genocide never happens again – in Rwanda or elsewhere. “We should not forget the importance of fighting Genocide denial and revisionism while remembering our beloved parents, Brothers and Sisters who lost their lives during the 1994 Genocide against The Tutsi” said Ambassador Isumbingabo

A Children’s choir sang both the National anthems. A minute of silence to pay tribute to the victims of the genocide was observed and a moment for prayer from Reverend Dr. Billy Kim before the lighting of the 21 candles as urumuri rutazima.
