Senate passes 30 out of 177 proposed constitutional amendments

{Members of the senate yesterday approved amendments to the constitution of the Republic of Rwanda with special attention directed towards political organizations functioning, power sharing, political pluralism and operations of the media.}

The amendments so made, however, are subject to review by the Lower Chamber that introduced the proposals after which a joint review will be carried out before the final posting.

The chairperson of Senatorial Political Commission and Good Governance Sindikubwabo Jean Nepomuscene advised the senate to note that cooperation of political parties does not necessarily translate into power sharing since every political organization remains an independent entity.

A total of 30 out of the proposed 177 amendments were effected, 25 passed with modest alterations while 22 were left intact.

Among the new amendments introduced, members of the public shall have an influence and a say in any need to call for a referendum instead of the same being a prerogative of the president and Supreme Court as has been the case before.
