{Police operations conducted on February 28 in Ngoma District against illicit drugs and other illegal substances resulted to the seizure of 731 illicit brew and six kilograms of cannabis and arrested six people in connection with the act.}

The suspects, who were found either selling or making the illicit drinks and narcotics, were identified as Angelique Musanabera, Elie Niyonkuru, Jean Baptiste Ndagijimana, Oreste Bikorimana, Japhet Niyotwizeye and Diane Uwase.

The illicit drinks include a banned crude gin commonly known as Kanyanga, which was banned in Rwanda. Kanyanga is classified under drinks with alcoholic content that exceed the recommended 45 percent.

Police said the successful operations were possible due to the cooperation and timely information exchange with the public, who informed police on the illegal dealings.

“Operations to crackdown on drug dealers have been going on and are part of our efforts to reduce crime rates as it has been realized that most crimes are committed by people under the influence of drugs; these operations are now a regular feature as they intensify the fight against drug dealers and peddlers,” said the Eastern Region Police spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi.

“Drugs are of real concern in our communities, not only due to the harm and misery they cause but also due to the levels of violence and disorder it brings.”

Through Community policing, Rwanda National Police has managed to effectively lessen the flow of narcotics and put in place stronger mechanisms that involve the public on overcoming this scourge

“Many citizens now understand the consequences related to drug abuse and are more determined to fight such. We urge the youth not to connive or shield those who break the law, or try to join gangs that offer nothing but ruining lives,” he added.
