Results from a survey carried out by the National Commission for the Fight Against Genocide(CNLG) on genocide ideology in 2015 indicate that more than 16% of Rwandans still have genocide ideology even though it was reduced by 84% in the past 20 years.
The five years budget made by Members of the Anti-Genocide Parliamentary Forum (AGPF-Rwanda) indicates that Rwf 400,000,000 is set to be allocated to implementing strategies of fighting against genocide ideology in Rwanda and Great Lakes Region.
AGPF-Rwanda argues that many people in the region still deny and trivialize genocide perpetrated against Tutsi and their countries have not taken measures to punish arrest and prosecute genocidaires.
The president of AGPF-Rwanda ,Theoneste Karenzi says that other than carrying out research on genocide ideology among measures to tackle it in the region, they have a plan of collaborating with organizations with which they share responsibilities of fighting genocide ideology in the country and in the Great Lakes Region. He also reveals that they will partner with parliaments in the region to tackle the ideology.
“Particulary we want to awaken parliaments in the region to fight against genocide ideology, enacting laws punishing such negation. It would play a significant role since parliaments are involved in the implementation of all laws and can exert pressure on their governments to punish perpetrators of genocide ideology,” he said.
The organization shall open a library stocked with books written on genocide perpetrated against Tutsi and other information that can facilitate researchers to find accurate information.
He said that research on genocide ideology in the great lakes will start in July 2016 while planned activities throughout the year are expected to cost Rwf 71,000,000.
