
{On Saturday, March 07, 2015; Youth across Rwanda participated in special community work Umuganda where they planted kitchen gardens for vulnerable families in their respective cells as a part of efforts to help fight malnutrition in rural areas.}
This was one of the recommendations from previous civic education (Itorero) for youth leaders from across the country that took place over the past few months
Speaking to young people in Karago Sector in Nyabihu District, the coordinator of the National Youth Council, Norbert Shyerezo advises them to work hard and contribute to the country’s sustainable development and get solutions to various problems in the society; “Let’s work hard as young people and be determined to continue on the path of development and shape a bright future and help the community to find solutions to problems,” stressed Shyerezo.
Peter Ntwali, 22 years old living in Karago Sector said that they appreciate this initiative which will help them to be involved in productive activities that improve their well-being and the development of the society mainly vulnerable families.
The youth leaders from Cell to National level whose performance contracts were aligned with national pillars of economy, social and good governance agreed to organise special Umuganda on quarterly basis.
During the special countrywide Umuganda youth helped vulnerable families to get a kitchen gardens to stave-off malnutrition in the communities.
The Executive Secretary of National Youth Council, Robert Mwesigwa stressed that “Youth across Rwanda have set a target of having a youth umuganda every quarter that is specific to the youth but also young people have committed to respond and to be part of general Umuganda to show that they’re the force behind the development of the country, youth have committed also to be the foundation of the development.”
The community work was organised by the National Youth Council in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and ICT, Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion and all districts.
The youth (aged 14-35) constitute about 40 per cent of the total population in the country, with 78.7 per cent under 35 years of age.
