Rwandan Women Earn Scholarships to Study in U.S.

{{Four Rwandan women who won scholarships to attend universities in the United States through the nonprofit organization, Open A Door (OAD) will begin undergraduate or graduate studies this fall. }}

The U.S. Embassy in Kigali was instrumental in providing assistance to the four young Rwandan women.

OAD helps talented young Rwandan women earn university scholarships in the U.S. Students are expected to return better able to effect cultural, political, and economic change in Rwanda.

The best candidates are selected via interview and paired with U.S. mentors who help navigate the college application and financial aid process.

The EducationUSA Advisor at the U.S. Embassy, Richard Kaburente, provided the students with educational advising services as well as access to TOEFL, SAT, and GRE testing material.

The students continue to have access to additional material on studying in the U.S. through the Information Resource Center located in the US Embassy.

The four scholarship recipients for the 2013-2014 school year are: Patricie Uwase: University of California Berkeley, Nadege Sesonga: Michigan State University, Sheilla Rukundo: Lehigh University, and Flavia Umulisa: Lafayette College.

These students join four other Rwandan women who obtained scholarships through the OAD program during its inaugural year in 2012. OAD has also accepted a third class of Rwandan women into their program for the 2014 school year.

The U.S. Embassy will continue to provide support to these students, as well as any others who are interested in studying in the U.S, through the EducationUSA Advisor in the U.S. Embassy Information Resource Center.
