Rwandan Prisoner Sues BBC over Defamation

BBC lawyer Richard Mugisha remained non committal over the matter but Gasabo district High Court confirmed that hearing date had been set at June 5, 2013.

Maj. Uwumuremyi submitted to Gasabo high court Accusing BBC radio that it had claimed in a broadcast that he had last year allegedly urinated on a plate of another inmate identified Ntaganda Bernard.

The allegations are contained in a September20, 2012 broadcast that aired over a local Kinyarwanda channel BBC Gahuzamiryango.

The radio report alleged that Prisoner Ntaganda was not taken care of to the extent that some inmates (Maj. Uwumuremyi) were urinating on his plate.

According to Nkongoli Laurent a Human rights commission official, BBC claims aired against Maj. Uwumuremyi are grossly flase;

“I went to the prison and requested Ntaganda to show me the plate onto which Maj. Uwumuremyi urinated. But he refused to provide the plate. my intention was to take the plate to the laboratory.”

“Ntaganda is a liar,” Nkongoli noted.

Nkongoli also added that he discovered, accusations against Maj. Uwumuremyi were fronted by Ntaganda and his colleagues with intention to have Maj. Uwumuremyi removed from their cell they were sharing.
