Rwandan peacekeepers in Haiti share Easter joy with orphans

{The Rwanda Formed Police Unit (RWAFPU5) contingent currently on a peacekeeping mission in Haiti, on April 5 shared the Easter Day joy with the orphans of Centre Communitaire Perpetuel Secours and Orphelinat in Jeremie, where they also donated an assortment of food stuff and other scholastic materials.}

The Rwandan peacekeepers held a get together celebration and had lunch with the 25 orphans currently at the orphanage centre.

The donation include sacks of rice, beverages, biscuits, clothes, shoes, books, pens and footballs, among others.

They were handed over by the RWAFPU5 contingent commander, Commissioner of Police (CP) Bruce Munyambo.

The occasion was also graced by a delegation from the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti, in a French acronym MINUSTAH, office in the region, headed by the Chief of Grand Anse, Johnson Loraine

The outreach programme came less than a week after these peacekeepers also unlocked the main road that connects the town of Jeremie to the capital Port Au Prince and other cities, which had been closed by mudslides and floods due to March 3 heavy downpour that had put businesses and movement of vehicles to halt.

The Director of the orphanage centre, Elaine Moussignac, who received the donation thanked the Rwandan peacekeepers for reaching out to the orphans.

“Today was a pleasure for these children to have spent the Easter day with the Rwandan delegation. You have been our good partners for quite a long time and we will always be grateful for your continued support,” Elaine said.

Rwanda FPU has been providing humanitarian assistance to the orphanage centre and a prison in the area, including providing them with clean water.

CP Munyambo expressed the pleasure of the Rwandan community in Haiti for sharing the joy of Easter with the vulnerable group, noting that it symbolises how much Rwanda attaches to being close and supporting the unprivileged.

He re-assured them of continued support and partnership of Rwanda Formed Police Unit.

RWAFPU5 is the fifth contingent of 140 Rwanda National Police peacekeepers serving a one year peacekeeping operations in the Caribbean nation, following the maiden deployment in 2010 when a devastating earthquake that befell the country left over 300, 000 people dead and about 1.6 million others homeless.
