{{A Rwandan National Agape Mpamira has been sentenced to 180 days to jail after he was found guilty of Drink driving in the United States.}}
Mpamira is a former southwest Michigan Mr. Blossomtime. He was handed the sentence Monday.
Mpamira was arrested last November for drunk driving and resisting police and last month pleaded guilty to the charges.
Police said by the time they were able to check Mpamira’s blood alcohol count, it registered .17, more than twice Michigan’s legal limit.
The 20-year-old was named the 2012 Mr. Blossomtime before his arrest.
During his sentencing hearing, Mpamira apologized to police, his family and the community for his actions.
Nearly two dozen people were in court supporting him.
Judge Dennis Wiley handed down the sentence and told Mpamira when you behave like Mpamira did, you put the lives of officers and others in jeopardy. Wiley called Mpamira a bright person with hopefully a bright future.
Mpamira has already served 125 days of his 180-day sentence, but also faces another problem.
He could be deported back to his native Rwanda. He came to the U.S. when he was a young boy and is not an American citizen. An immigration hearing is pending.
Mpamira was also ordered to pay nearly $2,800 for both counts against him.
