Rwandan athlete Nyirarukundo wins Monreal Marathon, sets record

Thousands came out to show their support to nearly 11,000 runners of all abilities, ranging in age from 13 to 82 who competed in Monreal Marathon ON Sunday September 23, 2018.

Sixty-one countries were represented in the race, but in the end it it was Salome Nyirarukundo, 20, of Rwanda, who was the victor in the women’s division, with a time of two hours, 28 minutes and two seconds, also a Montreal record. She also earns $11,000 with the victory.

Nyirarukundo was followed by Kenyan Joan Kigen who finished second, stopping the clock at 2:31.26, while Emebet Anteneh of Ethiopia finished in third with a time of 2:43.24 who joined her on the podium.

While Nyirarukundo is also a newbie when it comes to marathons, that didn’t stop her from setting a course record.

“This marathon is my first time running a marathon,” Nyirarukundo said, as quoted by globalnews.ca, adding she was very pleased with her time
In men category, Kenya’s Ezekiel Mutai, 25, came first and also earned $11,000 in prize money as Nyirarukundo.

In the men top three who mounted to the podium came Wycliffe Biwott of Kenya who finished second with a time of 2:15.28 and Jean-Marie Vianney Uwajeneza of Rwanda in 2:15.28.

In the half marathon, the winners were Alexis Lavoie-Gilbert of Quebec City (1:09:25), and Anne-Marie Comeau of St-Ferréol-les-neiges (1:14:46).
