Rwandan appointed head of UN Women network in CAR

{Chief Inspector of Police Antoinette Umuraza has been appointed the chairperson of the United Nations Police (UNPOL) Women Network under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).}

CIP Umuraza was appointed to head the women league in CAR during the celebrations to mark the 69th birthday of the UN held on October 24 in the capital Bangui.

She is among the thirteen Rwanda police officers deployed in CAR last month under UNPOL.

Rwanda National Police also maintains contingent of 140 officers serving under Formed Police Unit (RWAFPU).

CIP Umuraza said she will put much emphasis in fighting gender-based related crimes as they move towards restoring peace and harmony in the conflict-ridden nation.

Five other RNP UNPOL officers were also given certificates for their excellent and professional operations conducted in Bangui between October 7th and 12th to end atrocities in the capital.

Lt. Gen. Babacar Gaye, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in CAR, who officiated at the celebrations, noted that the international community is now “needed more than ever” to counter instabilities affecting states.

“Poverty, disease, terrorism, discrimination and climate change are exacting a heavy toll. Millions of people continue to suffer deplorable exploitation through bonded labour, human trafficking and the global economy remains an uneven playing field,” Babacar observed.

“This is a critical moment to reaffirm our commitment to empower the marginalized and vulnerable and make change, as MINUSCA, to Central African people,” he added.
