{The US ambassador to Rwanda Donald Koran on Wednesday has said the US is concerned with any media suspension in the country.}
Speaking after meeting with the representatives of Rwanda Media Commission (RMC), an independent institution responsible for Media Self-Regulation in the country, the American diplomat insisted that there was a need to respect freedom of the press in the country.
Referring apparently to the decision by Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA), a government body that has suspended the permission of British news channels to broadcast on Rwandan FM, the US diplomat said he was inquiring the competencies and responsibility of some government’s institutions over media houses in Rwanda.
According to the missions assigned to each institution, Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) is in charge of controlling the frequency for all Radio Stations while the Rwanda Media Commission (RMC) intervention is mainly focusing on the content aspect.
“It is apparently that there have been interference in the missions assigned to each institution, and this could be described as the breach of the freedom of expression right”, Ambassador Donald Koran told reporters in Kigali.
