Rwanda to share experiences on governance measurements with the world

{Rwanda is among countries selected by UN to help in establishing and assessing indices of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are time-bound to have been achieved by 2030 as confirmed in September 2015.}

Indicators of governance were tested in countries including Rwanda, Indonesia, Tunisia, England and Albania. Such indicators will help in measurements of the 16th SDG concentrating on good governance, justice and peace.

In a two-day meeting held in Rwanda , experts from the said countries taken as models are supposed to collectively seek and agree on how to measure SDGs indicators.

In Rwanda, indicators of good governance have been applied using the governance map, measurements of unity and reconciliation, citizens’ perceptions on governance, justice delivery and performance contract evaluation among others.

The CEO of Rwanda Governance Board (RGB), Professor Shyaka Anastase says that indicators of governance presented to the United Nations enable Rwanda to share its experience with other countries.

“Rwanda has succeeded in measuring indicators of governance; doing away with confusion among those who would think it is impossible. We are sharing our experiences with the world on how to measure 2030 SDGs,”he said.

He said that UN realized that Rwanda is experienced in using governance measurement indices and so will share with the world that experience.

While testing the governance reporting and measurement tools, UN also learnt from Rwanda how technology is used to improve governance. Last year’s measurement indicated that Justice Sector used technology to deliver services at 72%. Similar technology is used in measuring gender equality and registering new born babies.

The representative of UNDP in Rwanda, Stephen Rodriquez said that Rwanda’s developed tools in measuring governance will be used as model in approaching the implementation of SDGs.

Last year Rwanda emerged among countries which showed a good performance in respecting measurements of the eight Millennium Development Goals ended last year.

Although most of the MDGs in Rwanda were met, there are some challenges especially in poverty reduction, explains the state minister in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr.Uzziel Ndagijimana.

Dr. Uzziel says that Rwandan government is ready to implement SDGs through integrating them in EDPRSII, Vision 2050 and enhancing performance contracts among others.
