Rwanda’s Envoy to UN Elevated to Cabinet Minister

{{Rwanda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Eugène-Richard Gasana has been elevated to a cabinet position as State Minister in Charge of Cooperation.}}

Gasana becomes the first Rwandan envoy to the UN to serve as cabinet minister at the same time.

His appointment comes at a time Rwanda prepares to assume its seat at the United Nations Security Council as a non permanent member for two years effective January 1 2013.

Foreign Affairs minister Louise Mushikiwabo noted to local media:

“For purposes of the UN Security Council and Rwanda’s Non-Permanent seat over the next two years, it makes it easy to have a Permanent Representative with Cabinet rank, so that for matters that require ministerial presence, the Permanent Representative has the right rank credentials.”

Minister Mushikiwabo said, “It is also a fact that Amb. Gasana, who has been in diplomatic service for 18 years, has performed very well in his duties, so it’s also a well deserved promotion. We congratulate him.”
