Rwanda’s economy grows by 6.1 percent in second quarter of 2014

{Rwanda’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased by 6.1 percent in the second quarter of 2014, declining from the preceding quarter, the statistics bureau said on Wednesday.The report published quarterly by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda indicates that the GDP increased in the second quarter, compared to the 7.2 percent increase recorded in the same quarter of 2013.}

Nevertheless, the report pointed out that Services sector was the main contributor to the country growth with 48 percent of GDP while the agriculture sector contributed 32 percent of the GDP.

The industry sector contributed 15 percent of the GDP, and 5 percent was attributed to adjustment for taxes and subsidies on products.

In the second quarter of 2014, GDP at current market prices was estimated to be Rwf 1,314 billion ($1.9 millions), up from Rwf 1,156 billion ($1.7 millions) in the same quarter of 2013, the statement said.

The report indicated that the economic performance of the second quarter is attributed mainly to the tertiary sector, which has grown 9 percent, most notably in the field of transport and trade of 15 percent.

According to the report, agriculture, livestock, forestry and related activities occupies 33 percent in the tiny Central African nation’s GDP, followed by transport, communications with 15 percent, industrial manufacturing and mining 5 percent and 2 percent respectively.
