Rwanda requests U.S. and Partners support in eliminating threat of FDLR

Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign affairs, Louise Mushikiwabo has requested the United States of America as well as other partners to support its initiative in eliminating FDLR threat and its ideology.

The Minister was addressing the U.S. Embassy staff, partners and Rwandans gathered at the US Embassy in Kigali Thursday to celebrate the 238th anniversary of the Independent of the United States.

Mushikiwabo said “As Rwanda continues to fight the legacy of genocide and dark part of our history, we are happy to note that the people of US share the same vision of affirmation of humanity, the same vision of absolute intolerance or any attempt at the degradation of human values and the same vision of struggling against international terrorism.”

She further requested the US as well as many of Rwanda’s partners who were there “to support meaningfully and urgent fully Rwanda in eliminating the threat of FDLR, its ideology and its impacts and consequences in Rwanda, around Rwanda and in the region.”

She also said “As Rwanda looks at its 10 years of peacekeeping, exactly this month; we thank the US for the collaboration in peacekeeping. Our decision as a nation to participate in peacekeeping missions was prompted by our own conviction to fight any form of abuse of human rights and genocidal ideology especially after the event of 1994. The collaboration in the area of peacekeeping mission between Rwanda and US is a good example of meaningful partnership that mutually saves lives.”

Before talking about security issues, Mushikiwabo commended the significant support of the US throughout the past 20 years.

She noted that the liberation of Rwanda in 1994 exactly 20 years ago, and the independent of US ‘Jointly remind us about something very important in the history of two countries as an offspring of goodwill of few determined people who sacrificed a lot to liberate their countries, and their fellow countries men and women and more importantly chart a course of freedom.’

“In this 20 years my message is gratitude to the US and people of US for the steady support that the US Government has consistently provided to the Republic of Rwanda and the people of Rwanda since 1994, I could not miss this opportunity as we look back to 20 years and look forth the next more than twenty years to thank the US for standing by us and with us in the last 20 years.” She said

“A lot has been done by the US in this country and we continue to work together as partners but particular gratitude to the US government goes to those who have contributed to the good health of our people I think in the last twenty years we cannot ignore the fact that the US has contributed greatly to our health sector making our citizens not just healthy but more productive and hopeful for the future.”

She also thanked the US collaboration with Rwanda in the UNSC noting that currently they are working together on the very serious issue regarding Gaza in the middle Easter.
