{ Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Louise Mushikiwabo has told the media that the assumptions that the bodies found in Lake Rweru were from Rwanda are baseless and that Rwanda is ready for joint investigation to know the truth about the matter.}
“The claims are false; there are no facts indicating that the bodies would be from Rwanda or that are Rwandans. We have been requesting for joint investigation since it is the only way to find the truth. We don’t see any reason Burundian government would not be willing to work with Rwanda in conducting investigation. So far, we haven’t received any official report, we heard it from the media.” Mushikiwabo said.
Minister Mushikiwabo was speaking during a press briefing held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ headquarters.
On Tuesday 14, the general prosecutor of Burundi Valentin Bagorikunda told reporters that an investigation into 40 bodies found in Lake Rweru on the border with Rwanda has concluded that the dead were Rwandans.
Both Kigali and Bujumbura have repeatedly denied the bodies were from their countries. Last month, the United States urged the two countries to conduct a thorough investigation into the corpses.
