Rwanda Police rescues two girls from human trafficking

{Police in Ngororero District on June 7, arrested a woman identified as Clementine Nyiramahirwe for allegedly trafficking two young girls. }

She was arrested enroute to Kigali where she intended to sell them as housemaids, police said.

The victims aged 13 and 16 were in primary six and four respectively.

The two young girls went missing on the evening of June 5 when their parents reported to police that they were worried about the whereabouts of the children.

Police reveals that, the suspect had lured the girls without the consent of their parents and promised to find them jobs in Kigali where they would work as house maids earning Rwf 8, 000 per month.

According to police reports, the suspect, Nyiramahirwe, claimed that she only wanted to help them find jobs, although she had no relationship or known either of them before committing the alleged crime of human trafficking.

The suspect is currently detained at Gatumba Police Station as investigations continue.

Superintendent Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Western Region Police Spokesperson, condemned the criminal act and commended the parents for availing timely information that led to the rescue of innocent girls and arrest of suspect.

“Human trafficking is a criminal act punishable by the Rwanda laws. This crime undermines security and frustrates basic rights of citizens. We all need to continue working together to overcome those who participate in such atrocities,” Superintendent Hitayezu said.

He appealed to residents of Ngororero District particularly parents and teachers to be part of the campaigns against human trafficking through, mainly sharing credible information on anyone involved in the criminal act to ensure such people are arrested.

Human trafficking, under articles 250 to 272 of the Rwanda penal code, is punishable with a sentence between seven and ten years and fine of Rwf5 million to Rwf10 million.
