{The Rwanda National Police, yesterday, deported a Congolese national suspected of killing his girl friend before fleeing to Rwanda. }
Kamanzi Semarembo, who hails from Masisi in Northern Kivu, was arrested in October last year at a border post with the Democratic Republic of Congo in Rubavu District, as he tried to cross to Rwanda.
He is wanted back in DRC for killing his girl friend identified as Uwimbabazi Munyarugero, on October 7, last year.
The deportation papers were signed at ‘Grand Barriere’, a border post in Rubavu, where Chief Supt. Reverien Rugwizangoga, the Regional Police Commander for the Western region handed over the suspect to the Deputy Commander of Northern Kivu, Col. John Cabuine.
The event to extradite the suspect was also witnessed by the Chief Prosecutor for Rubavu, Vincent Niyonzima, his counterpart of Goma and the Mayor of Rubavu, Sheikh Hassan Bahame.
CSP Rugwizangoga explained that in October last year, they received information from their counterparts in Northern Kivu about Kamanzi’s bloody act, and that he was likely to flee to Rwanda.
“He was arrested at Petit Barriere (mini-border post) in Rubavu as he tried to clear at immigration offices on the Rwandan side,” CSP Rugwizangoga said.
“Later, Interpol-Kinshasa wrote to Interpol Kigali requesting that Kamanzi be transferred back to DRC to face trial, and it is in that sense that he was handed over to authorities in Northern Kivu today,” he added.
Col. Cabuine thanked Rwanda National Police for apprehending the suspect and its commitment to fight cross-border crimes.
“Families of the victim have been demanding for justice and this is a big achievement because justice will now be served,” Col. Cabuine said.
Last year, RNP intercepted five vehicles that had been stolen from neighboring countries and in transit through Rwanda.
Since the beginning of this year, RNP intercepted three cars, including a Range Rover stolen from the UK which was being taken to DRC from Burundi, through Rwanda.
