Military Court sentenced Cpl Habiyambere to life prison for killing innocent

{The Military High Court on 13 November 2014 found Cpl Habiyambere Emmanuel guilty of murder for killing an innocent civilian on 22 September 2014. }

He was sentenced to life imprisonment and stripped of his military ranks during Military High Court proceedings that were held in Rubavu District. The judges led by Maj Bernard Hategekimana also ordered Habiyambere to pay indemnities amounting to 2,275,000 Frw to victims.

Habiyambere shot dead an innocent civilian, Niyoyita J. Claude and injured three others on 22 September 2014 in Rubavu District, Gisenyi sector, Kivumu cell. The Military High Court started trial proceedings on 2nd October 2014, and continued on 12th and 13th November 2014.

RDF statement released on 23 September 2014 when the incident occurred reiterated that RDF does not condone criminal acts and any form of indiscipline within its ranks. “The suspect will be brought before Military Courts for prosecution and, if found guilty, he will be sentenced to the fullest extent of the law” reads the statement
