Rwanda launches Program for Youth in Holidays

{The Ministry of Youth and ICT (MYICT) on Saturday, November 22 launches the countrywide youth in holidays program aims at helping the youth to resist to all factors that lead them to risky behaviours and use their holidays productively.}

At the first day of the program, thousands of young people from across the country participated in the special community work (Umuganda) in their respective communities.

The program aims at sensitizing parents, community leaders, church leaders especially during the holidays to create a protective and conducive environment for holistic development of the youth.

The Minister of Youth and ICT, Jean Philbert Nsengimana stressed that “Let’s all take advantage of this unique opportunity; it’s going to be annual, it will be productive, we request all young people to participate in this program and we urge the community to facilitate the youth as they start the youth in holidays program.”

“Young people have set a target of having a youth umuganda every quarter that is specific to the youth but also young people have committed to respond and to be part of normal general Umuganda to respond more massively more than the usual participation. This is the moment for all the young people to raise and show that indeed they’re the force behind the development of the country, youth have committed also to be the foundation of the development,” noted Minister Nsengimana.

The expected results of this program is ensuring a better future for the Rwandan youth by avoiding drug abuse, unwanted pregnancies and peer pressure and other negative behaviours opposite to the Rwandan values.

This serves to remind youth of their role in self development which leads to the safe and developed country.

Joseph Irakoze, 19 years old living in Gacurabwenge Sector in Kamonyi District said that they appreciate the program which will help them to be involved in productive activities that improve their well being and the development of the country in general.

The program to support Youth in being productive during their holidays will be conducted up to 30th December has been organized by the Ministry of Youth and ICT, in collaboration with other stakeholders namely the Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Sports and Culture, Rwanda National Police, Ministry of Defence and National Itorero Commission.
