{{Tomato prices in Kigali Markets has drastically increased by over 25% in the past two months.}}
A quick survey conducted by IGIHE in major city markets found that tomatoes consumed in Kigali are imported from Uganda.
This has in effect affected the tomato prices in the city.
Tomato traders in Nyarugenge market told IGIHE that tomatoes are usually packaged in Boxes for whole sale purchase.
A box used to cost Frw30,000 before December last year. Today the price per box has increased to Frw43,000.
Adelphine Mukakalisa a client we found in Nyarugenge market said the tomato prices increased during the Christmas period, “until now, we don’t know why there is no change.”
Most of traders told IGIHE that, there are not enough tomatoes produced locally. One person has invested in importation of tomatoes from Uganda. Something should be done to avoid the same in future.
