Rwanda has sprouted from darkness of genocide—Magufuli

President Paul Kagame observed that Rwandans have made enormous progress towards improving livelihoods, striving for their dignity which is a road promising elimination and preventing reoccurrence of tragic history that ruined the country in the 1994 genocide against Tutsi 22 years ago.

Kagame made the observation during the launch of the 22nd commemoration of 1994 genocide perpetrated against Tutsi held yesterday which was attended by Tanzanian president John Pombe Magufuli and his wife.

Both presidents, Kagame and Magufuli, have talked about the reconstruction process of Rwanda in the past 22 years.

President Kagame said that as Rwandans remember for the 22nd time, they have a lot of achievements to show as the harvest of collaboration with friends.

“I think there are good examples of our achievements. We have taken the youth, our children to schools, built capacity and implemented good governance policies,” he said.

He criticized those who perpetrated genocide and continue spreading hatred as they did in the past.

“Those people realize that we have reconstructed infrastructures, reduced child mortality, promoted women; but add that something is missing, saying that there is no freedom, no democracy. Is there any democracy beyond Rwandans’ choices?” he said.

The president of Tanzania and Chairman of East African community (EAC), John Pombe Magufuli, noted that there’s a great deal of evidence to show how Rwanda has taken giant strides in different aspects of development and governance in the last 22 years.

“Over the past 22 years, Rwanda has sprouted from the darkness of genocide which destabilized the entire economy and devastated infrastructures of the country. It has made positive steps in politics, economy and in citizens’ welfare,” he said.

President Magufuli said that Rwanda’s achievements are apparent for everyone all over the World to see with various reports indicating that Rwanda is the most favorable country for business in Africa and is among African countries leading in the use of ICT.

He added that such achievements are reflected in improvement of people’s livelihoods.

“Villages have access to safe water, electricity, access to health care services, quality education and technology. However, the most exciting is opportunities to involve in activities boosting economy,” he said.

President Magufuli argued that Rwanda’s transformations extend benefits to other countries including Tanzania where 70% of Rwandan goods pass, through Dar es Salaam port.
