Rwanda electricity import from Kenya, Ethiopia faces challenges

{Rwanda Energy Group (REG) has said the process of buying and connecting electricity from Kenya and Ethiopia faces challenges of constructing infrastructures including substations in countries through which the electricity will pass.}

The Director General of REG, Jean Bosco Mugiraneza said that Rwanda faces the challenge of building substations, and promises that more efforts are being put in place to address the issue.

“We are preparing grids and substations through which electricity will be connected through the three countries,” he said.

Mugiraneza promised that 30MW are expected from Kenya and 40MW from Ethiopia adding that the transmission lines connecting Ethiopia and Kenya were built.
He said that electricity from Ethiopia is expected to be used in Rwanda by 2018.
