Rwanda defeats Kenya 82-77 in FIBA Africa Zone 5

(Xinhua){ — Better-form Rwanda beat Kenya 82-77 in Uganda on Tuesday evening in FIBA Zone 5 Basketball Championship.}

Rwanda, who had lost their opening game on Sunday to the defending champions Egypt 79-63, came back charged for the game against Kenya and attacked in numbers and defended well.

The Kenyan team had beaten Somalia 97-79 on Monday night. Hosts Uganda and Egypt who have won their opening games were meant to play later on Tuesday night.

Kenya and Rwanda have now lost a game each, while Somalia who have lost two games now are virtually out of contention to win the Championship which is being played on a round robin basis.Desmond Owili and Ancette Wafula tried to play their hearts out but failed to tame the determined Rwanda team that finished second last year.

Egypt are the defending champions after beating Rwanda last year in the final. The other teams in the men’s category include; Uganda, Somalia, Kenya and Burundi.

The women’s category groups Uganda, Burundi, Egypt and Kenya.

The teams that win the event will automatically qualify for the Afro Basketball and next year’s All Africa Games in Congo Brazzavile. Uganda’s men’s team last won the Zone 5 championship in 2004.
