Rwamagana worker kills employer over dishonesty in timber sales

Mukahigiro Belina , a 75 aged old woman resident of Muyumbu sector in Rwamagana district was yesterday killed at her home by a man she employed to work in her planted forest.

The Eastern Province police spokesperson, IP Emmanuel Kayigi has said that Mukahigiro had employed the man aged 55 to maintain her forest and sell timber with her authorization.

On Monday, a dispute between the two erupted over the employees dishonesty, selling timber behind Mukahigiro’s back which prompted her to demand for his immediate und and departure from her premises.

“Through the negotiations, the old woman was convincing the man to let her take his belongings including a bicycle and other domestic animals like rabbits and chickens as basic payments of illegally sold trees, which the employer rejected. Yesterday morning, the daughter of Mukahigiro woke up to seek local leaders to get involved in resolving the issue. When she left, the man killed Mukahigiro by hitting her with a hoe on the head, killing he instantly,” explained Kayigi who told IGIHE the suspect has been apprehended by neighbours and is being held by police.

If convicted of murder, the suspect will serve a life sentence as per article 140 of Rwanda’s penal code.
