Rwamagana Sanitation Centre to benefit 300,000 people

Developed under the partnership of SNV Rwanda and the District of Rwamagana, the facility is in line with the 2016 National Sanitation Policy and Implementation Strategy to effectively market sanitation products and services at the household level.

The centres are fully owned by districts and provide a wide range of sanitation technologies and products to ensure expanded access to safe and sustainable sanitation facilities, products and services.

Each Sanitation Centre will have a training section to facilitate transfer of skills, a selling point for a local entrepreneur where residents can purchase sanitation related products and services and a show room with various technical options of sanitation and hand-washing facilities to visiting households and professional contractors.

Supported by USAID-funded Rwanda Rural Sanitation Programme locally known as Isuku Iwacu, the centres target to reach approximately 300,000 inhabitants in each district

SNV leads a consortium of NGOs including World Vision and Water for People to implement Isuku Iwacu.

The overall goal of Isuku Iwacu is to increase local ownership and capacity to deliver sustainable, high quality sanitation and hygiene services in order to decrease childhood stunting, with the strategic objective of improving access to and supporting correct, consistent use of household sanitation and hygiene facilities.

In collaboration with local district authorities, Isuku Iwacu is supporting the establishment of District Sanitation Centres in eight districts namely Rwamagana, Kayonza, Nyanza, Ruhango, Nyabihu, Ngoma, Nyarugenge and Kicukiro.
