{The Mayor of Rwamagana District Radjab Mbonyumuvunyi has urged Muslim leaders to equally take up the mantle and engage the followers in the fight and prevention against crimes.}
He was addressing about 100 imams of mosques in Eastern Province on December 19 in Rwamagana.
The Mayor put much emphasis on the role of faith based organization in fighting domestic and gender based violence.
“Faith Based Organisations have a strong influence of how the society behaves, that’s why we encourage you to champion a positive attitude towards ensuring public safety,” said Mbonyumuvunyi.
On Fighting GBV, he said: “Ending Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse is a responsibly for all. We all have to join efforts and means to report and prevent such violence from happening.”
“Effects of GBV can go as far as affecting the economy of the country. A victim of psychological or physical violence may not be in position to perform effectively or even contribute to the economy of the country. This could as well be the same case to a child who is abused and tortured,” he noted.
Inspector of Police (IP) Goreth Uwimana, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) of Rwamagana, while thanking the contribution of the Muslim community, among other religions in public safety, noted that Rwanda’s uniqueness in both security and development is the existing partnership at all levels of institutions, civil society and the general population, which should, however, be taken to another level.
