{As the fight against trafficking, sell and use of narcotic drugs continues to gain momentum, the mayor of Rwamagana District Radjab Mbonyumuvunyi has urged residents to be the main force against the vice in the district.}
Mbonyumuvunyi made the call on Sunday while addressing over 400 residents of Sibagire Cell in Kigabiro Sector.
“Drug abuse is a dangerous act that fuels family conflicts, gender-based-violence and other crimes that affect the socio-economic set up of economies and communities. Real development cannot happen unless we fight this scourge, among other hindrances – therefore – we should all come together to combat it,” said Mbonyumuvunyi.
With regards to the highly affected category of the population, the mayor pointed out that; “majority of the drug consumers are youth yet they are the powerhouse of this country’s future.”
“Youth should conduct themselves in an honorable manner by not tolerating drugs, violence and criminality. They must be ambassadors of good ethics by sensitizing their counterparts about the dangers of drug abuse.”
Mbonyumuvunyi pointed out that cannabis and other illicit drinks are also among the major causes of other crimes like child abuse, theft and assault in communities.
“By fighting drug abuse you will be protecting and drawing a better future line for your children and our country. You can hide drug dealers today and tomorrow your child will be the victim,” Mbonyumuvunyi warned.
The District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Thomas Ruzindana told residents that fighting trafficking, manufacture, trade and consumption of narcotic drugs and illicit drinks should be a collective effort by all Rwandans to effectively strengthen current strategies against the vice.
“Selling illicit drugs is abetting double loss; first the hard-earned family income is blown away when these drugs are caught, destroyed and culprit imprisoned, this means the household is left with no one to provide basic needs and the children are left to suffer,” said the DPC
He urged them to maintain the spirit, embrace the concept of community policing through tightened night patrols and neighbourhood watch and share timely information with police on any wrongdoers.
