The 16-year-old was visiting from Nyagatare District, accompanying his mother on a visit to a family residing near the lake.
According to sources, the tragedy unfolded when the 9-year-old child, bravely attempted to rescue their drowning companion who lacked adequate swimming skills. Overwhelmed by fear, the 16-year-old clung tightly to his rescuer, ultimately leading to the unfortunate demise of both children.
The distressing incident came to light when a 5-year-old child, who had accompanied them but refrained from swimming, reported the tragedy to their parents. Local authorities were immediately notified, and a search operation was launched. However, as of press time on Monday morning, the bodies of the victims had yet to be recovered.
Déogratias Rutayisire, the executive secretary of Kigeyo Sector, has expressed his condolences and confirmed that the drowning occurred on Sunday at approximately 13:00.
