Public institutions, churches, schools and residents have been urged to to purchase lightning rods and install them on their premises to avoid future incidences that may be caused by lightning strikes.
Currently the price of lightening rod ranges between Rwf 50,000 and Rwf 200,000.
Byukusenge Gaspard, the Mayor of Rutsiro District said that some residents have started installing lightening rods and more are expected to comply with the move.
The District has embarked on measures to sensitize residents on protecting themselves from effects of thunder lightening.
In 2012,lightening strikes killed 11 people in Rutsiro and properties were destroyed.
He noted that in events of lightning strikes, people should avoid; taking shelter under trees, holding on metallic doors and windows, withhold using electric appliances when one’s house is not properly installed, avoid swimming in natural water bodies, where applicable there is a need to have a lightning conductor.
