Rusizi: Motorcyclists commit to promoting road safety

{Over 500 commercial motorcyclists operating in Rusizi District have expressed their commitment to ensuring road safety by abiding traffic rules and regulations.}

They made the commitment during a recent meeting with the District Police Commander (DPC), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Christian Safari, that reviewed and enhanced their partnership.

The motorcyclists organized under their cooperative – UCMR – met with the police in Kamembe sector where they also committed to public safety especially during the festive season.

In his address to the motorcyclists, SSP Safari, applauded the commitment and appealed to other taxi-moto to emulate UCMR in ensuring road safety and public order.

The DPC said that most road accidents are caused by violation of road safety rules and carelessness of commercial motorcyclists – a habit they should address by being more responsible while using roads.

“Over speeding not only puts you and your passengers at risk, but also endangers safety of other road users. This dangerous habit should stop – and you should sensitize your colleagues who are always in the habit of disrespecting traffic rules,” he said.

“We need full cooperation of all members of the motorists associations to understand this message. Association leaders should come up with measures to regulate the conduct of their members on the roads and work with Police to ensure that road traffic rules are followed by penalizing culprits.”

He also warned the motorcyclists against bribery tendencies, such as offering bribes to traffic police officers and reminded them to always denounce and report criminals such as drug dealers, who tend to use their transport means.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, John Hagenimana, the President of UCMR commended RNP for reaching out to them with important message and pledged to closely work with the Police to ensure road safety.

“We pledge to share with police and other security organs all available information concerning suspected wrongdoers” as Hagenimana said.
