Rusizi: 93 Rwandans repatriate from DRC forests

{Rwandan refugees yesterday repatriated from DRC forests to celebrate the New Year from their motherland. }

These 93 Rwandans arrived at the border of Rwanda with DRC yesterday around 2:00 pm coming from various locations of Karehe, Masisi, Mwenga and Walikare. They are provisionally accommodated in Nyagatare camp.

The returnees who fled to DRC where they’ve lived since 1994 say they are delighted to start a new year being in native country with no refugee status.

One of the repatriated refugees, Simbarikure Joseph aged 27 said; “We had never been comfortable in the forests we lived. FDLR militias used to tell us that whoever tries to come back is killed which threatened our repatriation. Arriving here, I have realized that the country is peaceful.”

“We have been surviving on hard labor, tilling for Congolese who at times come back under the cover of night to rob our items and money. We are very happy to start a new year in Rwanda,” said Nyirahabimana Zawadi.

As Haguma Ildephonse the leader of Nyagatare camp declared, returnees are set to receive foods and home equipments before getting reunited with their families.
