Police in Rulindo district on December 2 reconciled and reunited 27 families in Bugera sector that had either separated or having domestic disputes.
According to Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Emmanuel Dusengimana, Rulindo District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), majority of the conflicts were caused by property, drunkenness and the traditional character of men who dictate terms over their spouses and sell or misuse family property.
While meeting with the families, Dusengimana urged them to learn from the past bad experience, put everything behind them and open a new chapter focusing on what is good for their respective families rather than individual selfish ends.
He also warned them against drug abuse and excessive drinking in particular, which is tearing families apart.
During the meeting each family talked in details about issues that wrecked them and were asked to propose how best they can overcome the wrangles.
It was observed that most of the wrangles are centered at property ownership, mistrust, misuse of finances and drunkenness.
Each family’s case was handled separately and members agreed to reunite while police pledged to follow up on each of those families to ensure that they live in harmony.
Mathias Habumugisha, 43, and his wife Laurence Uwamariya, 40, were among the reunited families.
According to the couple, their lives were much complicated as they could not communicate and the effects were being felt by their children.
Habumugisha said; “We had a lot of mistrust between ourselves for a long time but we both wanted to put the misunderstanding aside and start a new life. We are happy that the police have given us a breakthrough to save our marriage.”
He added that one of the advice they gave them is to always consult their neighbors and family friends in case of any misunderstanding.
Habumugisha’s wife, Uwamariya pledged to do her best to ensure that her family lives in harmony.
