Gasabo District authorities have given only 90 days to residents of Gisozi Sector in Ruhango Cell to relocate without compensation fees noting that the move is in line with protecting them from the disasters as they live in high risk zones.
Few weeks ago residents have been given letters explaining that no one is allowed to house in wetland areas as well as in parts prone to disasters.
District officials said relocating human activities from wetlands is in line with the environment protection.
An evicted Nzamwitakuze Claudette said that before relocating, Gasabo should first compensate them.
“The plot costs me about Rwf 350,000. Leaders were among those who signed that the plot is mine. Since then I have established infrastructures, so I will relocate as soon as the District compensates me” Nzamwitakuze explained.
Speaking to media Niyonsaba Pascal, the executive secretary of the cell said residents will not receive compensation adding that they dwelt in that area by violating rules of housing.
He explains that residents were aware that no one was allowed to build houses in such parts.
Environment Experts said that the continued activity in the wetland threatens lives of dwellers and other living things.
